New Central Election Commission Starts Working

(Tbilisi, September 4, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The new, 15-member Central Election Commission (CEC) held its first session today, during which it elected the Deputy Chairman and Secretary.

Givi Komakhidze of the Revival Union was unanimously elected as CEC’s Deputy Chairman.

Giorgi Mikadze of the presidential-backed election alliance became Secretary of the CEC with 10 votes. The opposition parties New Rights, United Democrats, National Movement, Labor, as well as Nana Devdariani, the Chairman of CEC, supported Eldar Gogiashvili of the New Rights party.

ons for the referendum over the reduction of the number of MPs in Parliament.

Under the presidential decree, issued on September 3, voters will be able to vote for a reduction of the number of MPs in Parliament from 235 to 150. The referendum will be held simultaneously with the parliamentary elections on November 2.

If approved, the new Parliament will consider the relevant amendments to be added to the Constitution of Georgia.
