Parliament Discusses Amendments to Tax Code

(Tbilisi, August 20, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The today?s session of the Parliament started with discussion of the amendments to the Tax Code, which aim at increasing revenues to close the budgetary gap, as recommended by the International Monetary Fund.
 
The government intends to increase revenues by raising taxes on mobile phone communication and apartment building construction. The government hopes to accumulate additional 31 million Lari, out of a planned 45 million (USD 21.1 million), by increasing taxes.

If the Parliament approves the propo!
sal, taxpayers will have to pay additional 10% of the total sum of mobile calls and additional 85 Lari (up to USD 40) for every square meter of space in newly constructed apartment buildings.

Deputy Finance Minister Levan Chrdileli confirmed while speaking at the session today that the increase of taxes on mobile communication will trigger increase of prices in the entire communication system.
