Georgian Leadership, UES Chief Satisfied with Talks
(Tbilisi, August 6, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Chief of the Unified Energy System of Russia (UES) Anatoly Chubais said at the news briefing in Tbilisi on August 6 that he is “extremely satisfied with the talks with the Georgian authorities.”
“We are interested in import of electricity to Georgia, as well as in its transit to Turkey. Our strategy implies the development of purchased facilities and the implementation of joint projects with Georgia,̶!

He said that the cooperation with CIS countries is of strategic importance for the UES.
At the news briefing Minister of Fuel and Energy Davit Mirtskhulava also expressed consent with the talks with Chubais, saying the situation in the energy sector of Georgia would improve from now on. “This winter will be much better,” he added.
As a result of the deal with the US company AES the Russian power giant, which already owns 50% of the power lines in Georgia, acquires 75% of AES Telasi electricity distribution company in capital city, power plants Khrami-1, Khrami-2 and two power blocks of AES Mtkvari. Thus the Russian state-owned UES becomes the monopolist in the Georgian energy system.
