Georgia Ratified Rome Statute of ICC

(Tbilisi, July 16, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Georgian Parliament ratified today Rome Statute on International Criminal Court (ICC) with 146 votes.

The ICC is the first permanent international judicial body capable of trying individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

The Tbilisi-based Abkhaz government-in-exile has been urging for joining Rome Statute to allow for a case on genocide of ethnic Georgians during the armed conflict in Abkhazia.

On March 10-15, 2003 the delegations of the Abkhaz government-in-exile visited Hague. The delegation addressed the International Criminal Court to judge on evidence of the “genocide” of the ethnic Georgians during and after the 1992-93 war in Abkhazia.

The ratification of the Rome Statute requires some amendments in the Georgian legislations, that is still to be adopted by the Parliament.

The MPs from the Abkhaz government-in-exile called the Parliament to adopt these amendments as soon as possible.
