US Official, GUUAM Ambassadors Discussed Regional Cooperation

(Tbilisi, June 25, 2003, Civil Georgia) – US Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage held meeting with the Ambassadors of Georgia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Moldova (the GUUAM group) in Washington on June 24 to discuss multilateral projects to enhance regional security and economic cooperation in the region.

The State Department press service reported that Richard L. Armitage “underscored US interest in and enthusiastically endorsed the progress made on joint US-GUUAM projects in trade and transport facilitation and law enforcement cooperation.”

Deputy Secretary Armitage emphasized that the United States has high expectations that agreements on these programs will be approved at the upcoming GUUAM Summit of Heads of State in Yalta, Ukraine on July 3-4.

The Deputy Secretary and the visiting Ambassadors attached great importance to the strengthened cooperative relationship between the United States and GUUAM and agreed that the organization has the potential to foster beneficial development for the entire region.
