CSC Leadership is Concerned with Increasing Influence of NATO in Georgia

(Tbilisi, May 23, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Leadership of the Collective Security Council (Russia, Kyrgizstan, Tajikistan, Byelorussia, Kazakhstan and Armenia) expresses concern with NATO’s increasing influence in Georgia. Russian media reports that Secretary of the CSC Nikolai Bordyuzha, spoke about the issue at a press conference in Moscow on May 23.

“We do not understand necessity of extending NATO infrastructure over Georgia in direct vicinity with the borders of the Collective Security Treaty countries. We do not understand necessity of developing plans of deployment of NATO forces in Georgia” – Bordyuzha said.

Bordyuzha underlined that “necessary preventive measures” will be taken in response to any such step, particularly in direct vicinity of the CST countries”.

Georgia has withdrawn from the treaty several years ago.
