National Security Council Discusses Plan on Georgia’s Integration to NATO

(Tbilisi, May 16, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Georgian National Security Council (NSC) discusses today the plan, which considers as Foreign Minister Irakli Menagharishvili said “complex of measures aiming at Georgia’s integration to Euro-Atlantic security system.”

Foreign Minister Menagharishvili, which leads the commission on Georgia’s integration into NATO, told the reporters before the NSC meeting that reforms in the Armed Forces and the democratization process are the main provisions for NATO membership.

NATO Secretary General Lord George Robertson, which visited Georgian on May 14, said in Tbilisi “we welcome Georgia’s ambition to further integrate in the Euro-Atlantic structure.”

Lord George Robertson also said that NATO’s door remains open; however he added, “the NATO membership is a difficult challenge and it requires long preparations.”
