Sokhumi Refuses to Start Talks on Abkhazia’s Status within Georgian State

(Tbilisi. February 27, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Abkhaz de facto Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba met in Sokhumi on 26 February with Euro-parliamentarians, which pay fact-finding visit to Georgia, and told them that Abkhazia will not agree on talks with Tbilisi regarding the Abkhazia’s status within the Georgian state.

Russian media sources report quoting Shamba “90 percent of population of Abkhazia voted in a referendum in 1999 to endorse the constitution adopted in 1994 that considers Abkhazia as an independent republic.”

Tbilisi demands from Sokhumi to start talks on document elaborated by the UN Secretary General’s former envoy in Georgia Dieter Boden, which considers Abkhazian status within the Georgian state.
