Limited Electricity Supply for Tbilisi Caused with AES-Telasi’s Low Income

(Tbilisi February 7, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Starting from February 9 Georgian capital city Tbilisi will have limited supply of electricity.

US owned AES-Telasi company, which distributes electricity in Tbilisi, says that because of the lack of finances the company can not buy gas to produce electricity at the AES-Mtkvari power station, which is also owned by the AES company.

Ignacio Iribarren, General Manager of the AES-Telasi said at the news briefing today that Tbilisi residents failed in January to pay electricity tax, thus the income of the company was extremely low.

The Georgian Labors Party called the Tbilisi residents to refrain from paying electricity tax until a new tariff of the electricity is not drafted.

In late December Constitutional Court ruled positively on the appeal of leader of the Labors Party Shalva Natelashvili and requested Electricity Regulation Commission to draft a new, reduced electricity tax per one kilowatt.
