Putin Urges Gazprom to Resume Gas Supply to Georgia

(Tbilisi, January 23, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Russian President Putin ordered today to resume gas supply to Georgia within the 24 hours.

The issue was discussed at the meeting of Vladimir Putin with the top managers of the Gazprom and Joint Energy System of Russia companies today.

The gas supply from Russia to Georgia is suspended, since January 17, because of the damage of the gas pipeline in Russia’s North Ossetian Republic. Experts say the reason of the damage is explosion of the pipeline.

Russia is the only supplier of gas to Georgia. The suspension of the gas caused problems with the supply of the electricity to the Georgia capital Tbilisi.

Vakhtang Tsaava, Chief of the Tbilsgaz Company, which distributes gas in Tbilisi, told Civil Georgia today that at least two weeks are necessary to resume gas supply to the capital city.
