Interior Ministry Demands Special Rules of Voting for Policemen

The Interior Ministry of Georgia demands the Central Election Commission (CEC) to develop a mechanism, which will enable over 3000 law-enforcers to participate in the November 2 parliamentary elections in case if police is on high alert on the day of elections.

“The law-enforcement bodies will be on high alert, that is usual during elections. We are obliged to ensure public order,” Deputy Interior Minister Ruben Asanidze said at the news briefing today.

He said, policemen may vote at the polling stations specially opened for them.

Zurab Zhvania, one of the leaders of the Burjanadze-Democrats opposition election bloc, said on September 19, that if police is on high alert, policemen will have no chance to go to polling stations and vote.

“Special polling stations will be opened for them, where up to 40,000 policemen will vote under the supervision of high-rank police officials, thus they will be forced to vote for the governmental bloc,” Zhvania added.

During past years there were no rules of voting for policemen, and they very often failed to participate in the elections.
