Georgia Urges UN for Active Involvement in Abkhazian Conflict Settlement

(Tbilisi, November 12, Civil Georgia) – After the meeting with Jean-Marie Gu?henno, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Georgian Parliamentarians expressed disappointment with UN?s inactive role in the Abkhazian conflict settlement.

?After decade of conflict justifications for the peaceful settlement of the problem become less convincing,? Nino Burjanadze, Parliamentary Chairperson told the reporters today.

?Abkhaz separatists abducted dozens of Georgian civilians in Gali [district in breakaway Abkhazia] just before the visit of the UN senior official,? Kolbaia said after the meeting with Jean-Marie Gu?henno. ?The fact proves that UN should be more active in providing security guarantees in the region,? he added.

Georgian demands internationalization of the CIS peacekeeping troops, composed by the Russian soldiers. Georgian authority accused them of favoring the Abkhaz separatists.

UN senior official told the reporters before his visit to Sukhumi, breakaway Abkhazia?s capital on November 10 that the ?peaceful settlement is the only solution to the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict.”

After the meeting with the Parliamentary leadership Jean-Marie Gu?henno held talks with the Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze.
