Georgian Official Says Russia Increases Military Presence in Abkhazia

(Tbilisi, September 12, Civil Georgia) – Tamaz Nadareishvili, head of the Tbilisi-based Abkhazian government in exile told the reporters today that Russia mobilize its troops in Georgia’s breakaway region Abkhazia.

“Russia started to increase its military presence in Abkhazia before Putin’s statement [on September 11, when Russian President ordered the Defense Ministry to outline the plan of preventive strikes against the terrorist in Georgia]. Thousands of Russian soldiers are dispatched to Abkhazia at the moment,” Nadareishvili said.

Georgian Intelligence Chief Avtandil Ioseliani also did not ruled out the possibility of escalating tensions in Abkhazia, particularly in Kodori gorge, which is the only part of Abkhazia controlled by the Georgian government.
