Parliament Discusses Anticorruption Bills

(Tbilisi, March 21, Civil Georgia) – Today the Georgian Parliament started first hearing of the two Anticorruption draft laws – one proposed by MP Mikheil Saakashvili and another – by the Justice Ministry.

Reformers’ faction leader Mikheil Saakashvili, believes that another draft was proposed as an alternative by the government in order to hinder adoption of reformers’ draft.

Reformer Koba Davitashvili states that Justice Ministry’s draft has nothing common with the fight against corruption.

The draft law on “Return of Ungrounded Property to the State”, proposed Mikheil Saakashvili, considers return to the state of property, possessed illegally by the governmental officials, while the alternative draft does not considers this aspect.

The Justice Ministry elaborated the draft law in summer 2001, when Saakashvili was the minister. That time the draft faced considerable opposition of the government members.
