Shevardnadze For CIS Peacekeepers Withdrawal From Abkhazia

President Shevardnadze is for withdrawal of Commonwealth of Independent States peacekeeping forces, composed of the Russian soldiers and deployed along the separation line between Abkhazia and the rest of Georgia.

If the Parliament makes decision regarding the withdrawal of CIS peacekeepers from Abkhazia, President will do his best to implement the decision, Shevardnadze stated today. “Russian peacekeepers proved incapable to fulfil the obligations and keep the peace in the region”, he announced.

Georgian population in Kodori gorge, Abkhazia, is thoroughly protected by the forces of Defense Ministry of Georgia. Security measures are also taken in Gali region, Abkhazia, populated mainly with ethnic Georgians, President Shevardnadze announced.
