Russian Deputy FM, UN Envoy Meet over Abkhazia

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin met with UN’s special envoy, Johan Verbeke in Moscow on May 29, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a press release that ongoing discussion in the UN Security Council about the draft resolution on presence of UN observers “in the area of Georgian-Abkhaz border” was the topic of the meeting.

“The Russian side expressed hope that the future mandate of the mission will properly reflect the new political-legal realities in South Caucasus,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The current mandate of UN observers, who monitor situation on the both sides of the Abkhaz administrative border, expires on June 15.
