New Chairman of Constitutional Court Elected

The Georgian Constitutional Court unanimously elected ex-Minister of the Environment Giorgi Papuashvili as its new Chairman for a 5-year term, replacing Joni Khetsuriani.

President Saakashvili and Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze attended the official ceremony for naming the new Chairman in Batumi, Adjara Autonomous Republic.

The Constitutional Court has been relocated from Tbilisi to Batumi.

?From now on Batumi is the judicial capital of Georgia,? President Saakashvili said.

The Court is located in the residence of former Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze.

?If previously this building was a symbol of injustice, from now on it will be a symbol of justice,? Saakashvili said.

He also noted the importance of the decentralization process and said that the new status of Batumi as hometown of the Constitutional Court will help develop the entire Adjarian region.

Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze said she hopes very soon that other major state agencies, currently located in Tbilisi, will also be relocated ?to other autonomous republics? referring to breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
