Burjanadze: Moscow Behind Kodori Attack

Russia’s hard-line response to a report by the UN Observer Mission in Georgia on the March 11 attack on upper Kodori Gorge has only served to incriminate itself, Nino Burjanadze, the Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson, said on July 18.

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on July 17, in which it pointed the finger at Tbilisi, saying that the March 11 attack on upper Kodori Gorge ?favored, first and foremost, the Georgian side.? The UNOMIG report, however, ruled out any Georgian involvement.

?With this statement Russia has only confirmed our doubts,? Burjanadze told reporters.

Burjanadze?s statement was in stark contrast to the restrained comments made by PM Zurab Nogaideli. He said that he was surprised by Russia?s response because the report, as he put it, ?does not claim? that Russian helicopters were involved in the attack.
