Russia Withdraws Military Equipment from Akhalkalaki

The Russian Army has resumed its withdrawal from its base in Akhalkalaki. A convoy of trucks with military equipment left the base for another Russian military base located in the Armenian town of Gyumri on April 13, the Georgian Defense Ministry reported.

The convoy, consisting of 10 Kamaz trucks, contained five power generators, five tons of ammunition and 1.5 tons of engineering and other equipment. According to the Georgian Defense Ministry, the next convoy will leave Georgia on April 19.

According to the withdrawal schedule agreed between the Georgian and Russian sides, the Akhalkalaki military base will be closed down by autumn. Military equipment will also be withdrawn throughout the year from the Russian military base in Batumi.

The complete withdrawal of all Russian forces is expected to be completed by the end of 2008.
