New Tbilisi Airport Terminal to Open in January

Construction of a new terminal of the Tbilisi Airport has been completed and it will be opened on January 25, a top executive of TAV, a Turkish company that has been working on the airport, told Turkish news agency Anadolu on Friday.

Tepe-Akfen-Vie (TAV) is also renovating the airport in Batumi, Adjara Autonomous Republic, which is expected to be opened in April 2007.

Sani Sener, TAV Chief Executive Officer, said the company has invested a total of USD 100 million in construction of the two airports.

TAV, which has teamed up with the Turkish construction firm Urban, signed a deal with the Georgian authorities in September 2005, according to which the Tbilisi Airport was transferred to TAV with 15-year management rights. Construction of the new terminal in Tbilisi began in January 2006.

In March 2006, the Turkish and Georgian governments signed an agreement on the joint use of the Batumi Airport. The agreement calls for the incorporation of Batumi Airport into Turkey’s network of internal flights. Construction of the Airport was launched in May 2006.

Sani Sener, TAV Chief Executive Officer, also said that the company plans to launch a promotional campaign with tourism companies and airlines worldwide in an attempt to increase the number of flights to Georgia.
