Parliament Approves New Member of Constitutional Court

The Parliament approved with a 145 to 2 vote Ketevan Eremadze as a new member of the Constitutional Court of Georgia on July 14.

Eremadze?s nomination was proposed by Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze. The parliamentary majority fails to agree on the second nominee, which also should be appointed by the Parliament.

Six out of nine judges of the Constitutional Court have expired their 10-year term in office. According to the law two out of six new judges will be appointed by the Parliament; two by the President and remaining two by the Supreme Court.

President Saakashvili said on July 11 that he considers the possibility of appointing Giorgi Papuashvili, the Environment Minister, to the position of Chairman of the Constitutional Court.

Papuashvili?s nomination will mean resignation of entire cabinet, because Papuashvili will be already sixth minister replaced in the cabinet since it was approved in February, 2005.
