Opposition Leaders Meet Foreign Diplomats

Leaders of four opposition parties ? New Rights, Labor, Republicans and Conservatives ? held talks with the Ambassadors of France, Germany and representatives of the European Commission to Georgia on June 9.

The opposition leaders informed foreign diplomats about their position over necessity to change the current election system.

Opposition?s major concerns are about a first-past-the-post, ?winner takes all? election system; composition of the election administrations, which the opposition claims is controlled by the ruling National Movement party and about lack of clarity regarding the elections date.

?Our main task is to ensure that the elections are held fairly and transparently. The role of Europe is very important in this regard,? MP Koba Davitashvili, leader of the Conservatives party, told reporters.

MP Davit Gamkrelidze, leader of the News Rights party, said that the elections will be ?a very important test for the state.?

The four opposition leaders already met with U.S. Ambassador in Tbilisi John Tefft on June 8.
