New Rights Calls for Single Opposition Candidate in Mayorial Race

Leader of the opposition New Rights Party MP Davit Gamkrelidze called for the opposition parties to unite and nominate a single candidate for the Tbilisi Mayor’s position in the upcoming local self-governance elections.

“We are ready to give up our ambitions and deny the nomination of our candidacy and support a nomination made jointly by the opposition parties. This is our proposal and I hope other opposition parties will also join this proposal,” MP Gamkrelidze said while addressing the New Rights assembly in Tbilisi on June 3.

This statement by the New Rights leader echoes an earlier proposal voiced by opposition Conservative Party leader MP Koba Davitashvili.

Speaking on the political talk show ‘Reaction,’ aired by the Imedi television on June 2, MP Davitashvili said that there are two options for the opposition on the eve of the upcoming elections tentatively scheduled for this November – either unite and nominate a single candidate or unite and boycott the elections to force the authorities to change the current system of a first-past-the-post, “winner takes all” system.

MP Koba Davitashvili, who announced his ambition to run for Mayor last year, also said he is ready to say ‘no’ to this ambition and support the candidacy of Salome Zourabichvili, leader of the opposition Georgia’s Way party, only if the opposition manages to unite.

But Salome Zourabichvili seems to be refraining from this kind of cooperation with other opposition parties.
