Russian Embassy Denies Refusing Entry Visa for Georgian MP

The Russian Embassy in Tbilisi denied that it has refused to issue an entry visa to MP Givi Targamadze, the Chairman of the Georgian Parliamentary Committee for Defense and Security.

Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze said on November 16 that she refused to participate in the Parliamentary Assembly of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in St. Petersburg on November 17 after the Russian Embassy in Tbilisi refused to issue an entry visa to one of the members of the delegation – MP Givi Targamadze.

In a statement issued on November 16 the Russian Embassy confirmed that initially it has denied issuing a visa to MP Targamadze. ?But after the repeated consideration of the visa application of Mr. Targamadze, it was decided to issue an entry visa, either in the Russian Embassy in Tbilisi, or upon his arrival in Russia,? the statement reads.

?The Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson has been informed about this. Hence, the refusal of the Georgian delegation to participate in the CIS Parliamentary Assembly could hardly be linked with this visa problem. Apparently, there is another reason,? the statement by the Russian Embassy reads.
