Sokhumi Opposes Change to Peacekeeping Format

President of breakaway Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh said on September 30 that the Abkhaz side is against changing the current peacekeeping format in Abkhazia, which is set up by the 1994 ceasefire agreement between the Georgian and Abkhaz sides.

Russian peacekeeping troops stationed in Abkhazia, under the aegis of the Commonwealth of Independent States (SIC), monitor the ceasefire in the conflict zone.

?Without our consent it is impossible to involve other states in the peacekeeping process,? Itar-Tass news agency quotes Sergey Bagapsh as saying.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili called on the European Union and the United States for more active involvement in the Abkhazia and South Ossetian peace processes.
