Abkhazia Heightens Security on Borders

The Defense Ministry of breakaway Abkhazia reported on September 21 that the Abkhaz armed forces are on high alert and security on land and naval borders has been strengthened after the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali was shelled on September 20, reports the news agency Apsnypress.

De facto President of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh, who arrived in Tskhinvali to mark the unrecognized republic?s 15th anniversary of de facto secession from Georgia, is still in Tskhinvali.

Breakaway South Ossetia?s Press and Information Committee reported that seven civilians, including a two-year-old child, were injured as a result of mortar shelling of South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali on September 20. According to this report, mortar fire was opened at 7 am local time from the Georgian village of Ergneti, south of Tskhinvali.

However, the Georgian side dismissed the reports as ?provocations and disinformation.?
