Two Criminal Suspects Killed in Clash with Police in Pankisi

Two criminal suspects were killed and four local civilians and one policeman was wounded as a result of a shootout, which occurred in the village of Duisi in the Pankisi gorge on July 3.

Police said the Interior Ministry?s special purpose unit stormed the house in Duisi, where two armed men barricaded themselves after several hours of fruitless negotiations.

Four residents of the village, including one woman, were also wounded in the shootout between police and the suspects.

Reportedly, the local population of the village, angered over this operation, expressed protest by throwing stones at the policemen.
