Opposition New Rights Leader Speaks of Bush’s Talks with MPs

The leader of the opposition New Rights parliamentary faction Davit Gamkrelidze, who was among those parliamentarians who met with U.S. President George W. Bush on May 10, said at a news briefing that during the meeting he mainly focused on the problems which exist in Georgia in respect of rule of law and the judiciary system.
 
MP Gamkrelidze also said that the U.S. delegation spoke about the necessity of preserving the energy independence of Georgia.
 
“Also, President Bush made it clear that he is ready to mediate between Georgia and Russia, instead of making ultimatums,” Gamkrelidze said, adding that this statement by the U.S. President was made regarding Russian military bases and conflict resolution issues.

Leader of the New Rights expressed regret that there was no opportunity for a separate meeting between the opposition representatives and the U.S. President. Davit Gamkrelidze was the only opposition parliamentarian in the group of MPs which met with Bush in Tbilisi.
