Ex-Adjarian Leader’s Daughter Interrogated

The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed protest regarding the frequent interrogation of ex-Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze’s daughter Diana Abashidze, who arrived in Adjarian Autonomy on June 20 to mark one year anniversary of the death of her mother.

“Official Tbilisi has firmly assured that it would not persecute Aslan Abashidze and his family members,” the statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry on June 23 reads.

Diana Abashidze has been interrogated by the local prosecutors for several times already. As Georgian Interior Minister Irakli Okruashvili said Diana Abashidze is identified as the legal owner of assets allegedly stolen by her father.

No charges have been brought yet against Diana Abashidze, however, as her lawyers says Diana Abashidze is restricted from free movement because of the frequent interrogations.

Ex-leader of Adjara Aslan Abashidze fled Russia on May 6 after receiving security guarantees from the Georgian central authorities. Talks were mediated by the Russian side.

However, Georgian Interior Minister Irakli Okruashvili says that Abashidze and his family members were given of non-persecution guarantees only on the Russian soil.
