President, UN Envoy Discussed Abkhaz Issue

(Tbilisi, August 14, 2003, Civil Georgia) – President Shevardnadze held talks with the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative in Georgia Heidi Tagliavini on August 13.

The President’s press office reported that the process of implementation of the Sochi agreement between Russian and Georgian Presidents was discussed during the meeting.

On March 7 Eduard Shevardnadze and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin agreed on restoration of the railway link between the two countries via Abkhazia, safe return of IDPs in Abkhazia and rehabilitation of the power facilities in the breakaway region.

Heidi Tagliavini and President Shevardnadze also discussed the recent report of the UN Security Council on situation in Abkhazia, which expressed concern over the standstill in talks regarding the political status of Abkhazia.
