Georgian Security Ministry Dismisses Claims of Existence of Terrorist centers in Georgia

(Tbilisi. May 6, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Georgian Security Ministry stated that claims of the French interior minister, regarding possible moving of the Al-Qaeda centers from Afghanistan to Georgia are groundless.

“Currently we can only say that the State Security Ministry and the Georgian law enforcing agencies to everything to prevent penetration of the terrorist to Georgia and particularly to Pankisi gorge” – Nika Laliashvili, spokesman of the Security Ministry told Civil Georgia.

He also ruled out any possibility of recent penetration of any armed group to Georgia, thus dismissing claims of the French minister.

Nicolas Sarkozy, head of the French Interior Ministry said at today’s summit of the G8 interior ministers that Al-Qaeda network is “very disorganized, particularly after the Afghan campaign and its operative centers have apparently moved, perhaps towards Chechnya and Georgia”.
