Shevardnadze Offered US to Use Georgian Air Fields?

(Tbilisi February 13, 2003. Civil Georgia) – BBC Russian service reported today quoting Pentagon official that Georgian President Shevardnadze offered US to use its military airfield in war against Iraq.

According to the BBC Russian service Shevardnadze offered the US administration to deploy its air forces at Vaziani military base, near Georgian capital Tbilisi. The source at Pentagon also says that the US considers Georgia’s proposal.

The rumors regarding the possible use of Georgian military air fields by the US broke after the meeting of President Shevardnadze and Stephen G. Rademaker, US Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, which was held beyond the closed doors in Tbilisi on February 10.

Georgian President’s press office refrained to make detail comment regarding the report. “We are not aware of this kind of proposal,” Bondo Mdzinarishvili, Georgian President’s Deputy Spokesman told Civil Georgia today.

Georgian President reaffirmed his support to the US campaign in Iraq in his radiobroadcast on February 10, saying that Washington is Georgia’s friend and partner.
