Russian Officials Says Private Firm Reopened Railway with Abkhazia

(Tbilisi, January 15, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Russian Transport Deputy Minister Yuri Diakonov said at the briefing on January 14 that the Russian Transport Ministry has nothing common with the reopening of the railway link between Russia and Georgia’s breakaway Abkhazia.

He said that the private company organized resumption of the railway connection and the Russian authorities did not take the decision.

Russian official’s statement comes after the Georgian President’s announcement on January 13 that Georgia will not prolong the Russian peacekeepers’ mandate in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone until the closure of the railway connection between Russia’s Black Sea city of Sochi and Abkhaz capital Sukhumi.

At the moment Georgian Transport Minister Merab Adeishvili holds talks in Moscow to convince the Russian authorities to close the railway route with the breakaway region.
