Government Concerned with Possible Suspension of EU Assistance to Georgia

(Tbilisi, July 10, Civil Georgia) – President Shevardnadze stated at the government’s meeting on July 10, that European Union’s possible decision to suspend financial and technical assistance to Georgia is connected to the abduction case of British citizen Peter Shaw.

“The fact of kidnapping has already damaged Georgia’s international image,” Avtandil Jorbenadze, the State Minister said at the government’s meeting.

Foreign financial assistance is vital to avoid budgetary shortfall. That is why Georgian government is extremely concerned with the possible suspension of assistance.

The EU supports Georgia through Tacis technical assistance program. The financial aid of the EU to Georgia consists 44 million Euros in 2002.
