Georgia Urges UN for Decisive Action in Abkhazia

In his letter to the UN Security Council the Georgian Ambassador to the United Nations, Revaz Adamia, calls on the Security Council to take a ?firm position? and ?decisive actions? in order to foster the settlement of the conflict in Georgia?s breakaway Abkhazia.

?We would like to reiterate that Georgia is committed to the peaceful resolution of the frozen conflict in Abkhazia, Georgia, despite what one might hear regarding the alleged aggressiveness of the new Government,? Revaz Adamia says in his letter, dated July 26.

Ambassador Adamia underlines the new Georgian government?s steps undertaken in order to reduce tensions in the Abkhazian conflict zone. He says that the Georgian authorities have disarmed and detained several criminal groups, which operated in the conflict zone and which were involved in kidnappings, including the abduction of the 5 people from the UN Observers Mission in Georgia.

The Georgian envoy to the UN expresses hope that the upcoming elections of de facto president of separatist regime may represent a breakthrough in the peace process.

?While these elections are clearly illegal and illegitimate, we still hope that the new leadership of the secessionists may stand for more constructive and responsible positions,? Revaz Adamia says.

The Georgian Ambassador expressed his concerns regarding Russia?s unilateral moves in Abkhazia, particularly concerning the visa-free regime on the Abkhaz segments of the Georgian-Russian state border and the distributing of Russian passports in breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

?Granting Russian citizenship to the population of the separatist regions is practically completed; illegal acquisitions of land and property in Abkhazia, Georgia still continues; training of representatives of Abkhaz separatists in military schools of the Russian Federation is still taking place; from time to time hundreds of armed mercenaries are entering the Georgian territory from Russia to conduct so-called ?joint maneuvers,? Ambassador Adamia says.

The Georgian envoy urged the Security Council to visit Abkhazia after the presidential elections in the breakaway region, which are scheduled for October 3. ?It might be exactly the right time to learn the reality on the spot and demonstrate to the new leadership of the separatists the will and vision of the international community,? Revaz Adamia added.
