Gachechiladze Tells Supporters to be Vigilant at Polling Stations
Presidential candidate Levan Gachechiladze, backed by the nine-party opposition coalition, has called on voters to be active and not to allow the authorities to rig the election.
Speaking at a news conference the day before the polls, Gachechiladze called on his supporters to be vigilant at the polling stations on January 5.
“I call on my supporters to watch carefully each ballot box and polling station to prevent the theft of ballot boxes,” he said.
Appealing to western observers, Gachechiladze also said: “I think that it is not in the interest of the west to have rigged elections in Georgia. We will not let it happen.”
Meanwhile, State Minister Davit Bakradze, a Saakashvili campaign spokesman, called on opponents on January 4 not to mobilize supporters at polling stations. Such a move, he said, would entail “a high risk of confrontation and provocation.”
