Adjara Election Results to Trigger New Wave of Protests Rallies

Mikheil Saakashvili, leader of the National Movement opposition party, said today, while commenting on the election results in Adjara Autonomous Republic, “the protest rallies will start on November 6 in the regions of Georgia.”

The Adjara Autonomous Republic submitted this evening to the Central Election Commission results of the November 2 parliamentary elections, according to which the Revival Union, led by head of Adjara Aslan Abashidze, received 95% support of Adjarian voters.

“The results from Adjara put the pro-presidential bloc [For New Georgia] and the Revival in the top of the polls, this is inadmissible as they have stolen our votes and manipulated election results,” Saakashvili said at a news briefing on November 6.

“Tomorrow [November 7] the mass protest rallies will start in Zugdidi, Zestaponi, Poti, Gori and in other parts of Georgia demanding from the government to recognize the opposition’s victory in the elections,” Mikheil Saakashvili said.

“The mass ballot fraud and manipulation of election results is a coup attempt by Shevardnadze and in case the government does not recognize our victory we will demand Shevardnadze’s resignation,” Saakashvili added.

He also said that on November 8 opposition will hold the protest rally in Tbilisi as well.
