NATO, Georgia Officials Meet in Brussels

Consultations on defense policy and military issues were held at NATO Headquarters in Brussels on February 1 in the frames of Georgia?s Intensified Dialogue (ID) with NATO, the Georgian Defense Ministry reported. 

The NATO delegation was led by Assistant Secretary General for Defense Policy and Planning, John Colston. The NATO Secretary General?s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, Robert Simmons; representative of NATO Defense Policy and Planning Division Bruce Bach; and representative of Political Affairs and Security Policy Division, coordinator of Georgia, James Mack, also attended the meeting.

The Georgian delegation was led by Deputy Defense Ministers Levan Nikoleishvili and Batu Kutelia.

The two sides discussed the compulsory requirements for Georgia?s accession to NATO, priorities in the defense sphere and future plans. Particular attention was focused on Strategic Defense Review (SDR), resource management, defense planning, procurements, budget and Georgia?s participation in peacekeeping operations, according to the Georgian Defense Ministry.

According to the Georgian Defense Ministry, the next round of consultations between NATO and Georgia in the ID format on political and economic issues will be held on March 22.
