Tbilisi Pushes for Scrapping S.Ossetia Negotiating Format

At a session of the Joint Control Commission (JCC) in Vladikavkaz on October 12 the Georgian negotiator Merab Antadze pushed to change the current negotiating format to one in which the EU, U.S. Russia and OSCE would act as ?guarantors? in the peace process.

Tbilisi insists that the quadripartite JCC format, involving negotiators from the Georgian, South Ossetian, Russian, and Russia?s North Ossetian sides is outdated, ineffective and unfair.

?By the end of the day [on October 12] this proposal of Merab Antadze led talks to a deadlock,? Dimity Medoev, the breakaway region?s envoy in Russia, told Russian television stations.

Moscow and Tskhinvali have condemned Tbilisi?s drive to scrap the current negotiating format as an attempt to stall the peace process.
