Governmental Commission Created for Repatriation of Meskhetians

According to a decree by the President of Georgia, a special commission has been set up to work over the issue of repatriation of Meskhetian Turks to Georgia. Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues Goga Khaindrava will chair the commission.

On March 22 Goga Khaindrava held talks with Suleiman Barbakadze, head of Vatan, an international organization of Meskhetian Turks, who urged the adoption of a law for repatriation.

Goga Khaindrava said that the Meskhetian Turks should return to Georgia on a voluntary basis.

The Meskhetian Turks were deported from Georgia in 1944. A part of them is currently residing in Russia?s Krasnodar district without Russian citizenship. Upon accession to the Council of Europe (CoE) in 1999 Georgia undertook a commitment over the repatriation of the Meskhetians.
