Georgia Supported US Over Iraq at the UN

(Tbilisi. March 13, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Georgia joined those delegations that had voiced support for the draft resolution sponsored by Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States regarding the Iraqi crises. 

As members of the United Nations Security Council continued private talks on the way forward in ridding Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, the 15-nation body concluded its open debate among non-members on March 12, the UN news centre reports.

?Introduction of the time frame for implementation of resolution 1441 (2002) is justified,? Senior Advisor of the Permanent Representation of Georgia to the UN Gocha Lortkipanidze said during the debates.

He said despite some recent progress on cooperation by Iraq, it continued to fail to offer a full, accurate and complete declaration of its holdings, and engage in voluntary, unconditional and active cooperation with UNMOVIC and the IAEA.

?Iraq had already been found to be in material breach of 16 previous resolutions over 12 years.  Therefore, that Iraq?s continued possession of mass destruction weapons is a direct and active threat to international peace and security,? Lortkipanidze said.
