Scheffer: NATO Seeks no Direct Role in Georgia’s Conflict Resolution
NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said after talks with visiting Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli in Brussels on November 28 that although NATO is following the developments involving the South Ossetian and Abkhazian conflicts the alliance “is not seeking a direct role in this process.”
He said that the Georgian Prime Minister has informed the North-Atlantic Council about the Tbilisi Action Plan over peaceful resolution of the South Ossetian conflict. He also said that the Abkhaz conflict was also discussed during the talks.
“NATO is not looking for a role in that process… I know that Prime Minister has presented the proposals [on South Ossetia] at the Permanent Council of the OSCE in Vienna. NATO is following of course of this with interest, but NATO is not seeking a direct role in this process,” Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said.
