Russian Foreign Minister Warns Over Possible Unrest

Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said after talks with Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze that “now, it is important to avoid bloodshed.”

He has already left Batumi, where he arrived on November 23 late at night after his meeting with President Shevardnadze in Tbilisi. “We exchanged opinions over the recent developments in Georgia.

Abashidze raises concern over President Shevardnadze’s urgent resignation and declares that this will not foster political stability. The most crucial is now to avoid bloodshed,” the Russian Foreign Minister said after his meeting with Aslan Abashidze.

He refrains from commenting regarding possible further developments in the country, saying that “it is difficult to make optimistic forecasts.”

Igor Ivanov arrived in Tbilisi on November 23 at dawn to mediate talks between Eduard Shevardnadze and opposition leaders.
