Council of Europe PA Delegation Calls on Political Parties for Talks
Matyas Eorsi, Eugueni Kirilov and Andre Kvakkestad, members of the delegation of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly sent to Georgia in the framework of the second round of parliamentary elections made on November 23 the following statement in Tbilisi after their meeting with Interim President Nino Burjanadze.
They recalled that in the course of the three missions PACE had sent this year to Georgia in February, June and October, respectively, they solemnly warned that elections would not be free and fair.
They stressed the need for substantial progress to be made by national authorities in organizing the elections.
Despite tremendous efforts made by the international community, they regretted that the elections went much worse than they would have expected.
Massive frauds and irregularities raised serious doubts on the results of the elections published on 20 November as to whether they reflect the will of Georgian people.
Before coming to Georgia and ever since the delegation repeatedly indicated its wish to meeting with President Shevardnadze, as well as with several ministers including the Minister of Interior.
They already met some political forces of all sides, as well as with Nana Devdariani, Chairperson of the Central Electoral Commission. They remained open to meeting with any state institution or political leader which so wish.
Police forces and opposition should be congratulated for their non-violent attitude in the course of yesterday and today events. The delegation encourages keeping on the same stand.
Peaceful solution must be achieved rapidly and substantial negotiations should be launched by all political parties without delay.
