Shevardnadze to Convene New Parliament in Nearest Days

President Shevardnadze said today he will not violate the Constitution of Georgia and after announcement of final results of the November 2 parliamentary elections, he will convene the first session of the new Parliament.

“The Constitution obliges me to convene the first session of the Parliament. The Central Election Commission will announce final results of elections in a couple of days and I will convene the session immediately. I intend to attend one of the first sessions and offer constitutional amendments to the new Parliament. As you know the referendum on reduction of number of MPs was also held simultaneously with the parliamentary elections and most voters supported the initiative,” President Shevardnadze said in his Monday radiobroadcast on November 17.

The amendments over reduction of number of MPs will be discussed by the new Parliament and be enforced after the next parliamentary elections in 2007.
