EUMM Welcomes Release of Three Georgians

EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM) welcomed release of three Georgians by authorities in breakaway South Ossetia and expressed hope the move would signal launch of release of remaining Georgian detainees.

“The Mission hopes that this is the prelude to the release of all those detained since the 2008 conflict by the de facto South Ossetian authorities for various administrative reasons,” EUMM said in a statement on May 13.

“This step has already been taken by the Georgian authorities,” it said.

Tskhinvali released three Georgian citizens on May 13. After talks with Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner, Thomas Hammarberg, in Tskhinvali on May 2, the South Ossetian side released three detainees and pledged to free three more detainees.

“In future the public living in the adjacent areas should not fear detention if they inadvertently transgress the administrative boundary line,” EUMM said.
