NATO has decided to open an Intensified Dialogue with Georgia, an alliance source told Reuters on September 18.
An Intensified Dialogue (ID) with NATO is viewed as a precursor to being invited to enter the alliance Membership Action Plan (MAP). Becoming a MAP-country should eventually lead to full NATO membership.
A final decision is expected to be made at the meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers in New York on September 21.
“We made it clear [to Georgia] that with this step comes greater responsibility. It mustn’t ruin everything with a crisis now,” an alliance source who declined to be identified told Reuters.
