Russia Criticizes OSCE Effectiveness on Georgian Border

(Tbilisi, November 15, Civil Georgia) -Col-Gen Konstantin Totski, Chief of the Russian Federal Border Guard Department told the reporters on November 14 that the OSCE border monitoring mission in Georgia is insufficient to control uneasy Russian-Georgian frontier.

Russian media sources report quoting Totski that situation at the Georgian-Russian border remains difficult.

The OSCE border monitoring group operates across the 82-kilometre border between Georgia and the Chechen Republic of the Russian Federation. In December 2001 the OSCE extended monitoring to the 58-km Ingush section of the Georgian-Russian border.

Georgian authorities want the OSCE to extend the operation at the Daghestani section of the Georgian-Russian border as well. These are the most troubled sections of the state border, which neighbors with rebel Chechen Republic.

Russian Border Guard Department delegation arrived in Tbilisi on November 14 to hold talks with Georgian counterparts on the joint measures, which aim at increasing security at the troubled parts of the Georgian-Russian border.
