Tbilisi Responds to Moscow’s ‘Georgia Rearming’ Claims

Tbilisi said in response to Russia’s warning against “rearming” Georgia, that it was an independent country and had "a sovereign right to self-defense.”

“Georgia poses no threat to any of its neighbors," the Georgian Foreign Ministry said on July 23. "Despite the fact that Russia continues to illegally occupy significant parts of Georgia, in direct violation of ceasefire agreements to which they are a party, Georgia abides by its commitments stemming from the August 12, 2008 ceasefire agreement, in particular its non use of force pledge.”

It also stressed that the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) was actively monitoring the situation in the areas adjacent to the occupied territories and throughout Georgia.

“The EUMM provides regular updates that Georgia remains in compliance with its commitments,” the statement reads. "In contrast, the Russian Federation continues to deny EUMM members access to the occupied territories."
