MPs Hail Document on Plan of Action for Georgia’s Accession into NATO

(Tbilisi, December 13, 2002. Civil Georgia) – Georgian envoy to NATO Davit Dondua informed the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security regarding the document regarding the plan of action of the government aiming at Georgia’s membership in NATO.

The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs elaborated the document. Dondua said that the National Security Council would discuss the paper within the week. The MPs welcomed the document and expressed the hope that the provisions of the paper would be implemented.

The main provision of the document is the reform of the Georgian Defense Ministry and the law enforcement bodies.

Georgian President Shevardnadze made an official bid for the NATO accession at the Prague summit in November. On December 9 Eduard Shevardnadze stated that Georgia would be ready to join the organization in two-three years.
